Saying goodbye to the true Webmaster
Jeff Croft nails it in his “I Thought The ‘Webmaster’ Days Were Done.” When the Web was in its infancy, people who built websites had to do everything themselves: design, programming, system administration, copywriting, and a good deal of client hand-holding.
Nowadays, most big agencies and corporations are smart enough to realize that the attributes necessary to do all of those tasks equally well are not likely to be found in a single person, but that doesn’t mean they don’t try to find this Super Webmaster. Having had to fill that role for half a decade, I’ve finally just decided to move out of the game — tackling motion graphics instead, so I can hopefully concentrate on design and ideas again.
Of course, this desire to have the ultimate multi-tasker isn’t limited to Web Design. Jenny is currently a candidate for a job with one of the broadest job descriptions I’ve seen in a while. Basically, they have the budget for one person, and need the skills of three or four. It is a good job, but I know what it is like to be stretched too thin at work, and hope she won’t have to suffer a similar fate.
