A Bug’s Life

I could never be an entymologist.

I just ran downstairs to grab a drink of water from the fridge (a necessity since I’m pretty sure our tap water is lethal in large doses), and found four large slug-like bugs stubbornly resting themselves in the middle of my kitchen floor. The fact that I didn’t notice them until after I had my water (and the fact that I was barefoot) made me squirm a little.

This is just the latest in our battle against bugs here in Savannah. We used to joke about mosquitos being bad back in Minnesota during the summer. While mosquitos are a pest, and probably more dangerous as transmitters of disease, the slugs and cockroaches and random other nasty bugs that seem to come out of nowhere in Savannah are almost more than I can stand. The scene of Jenny and I chasing large cockroaches around our apartment is getting to be a regular activity — I’m starting to consider it my cardio routine. Definitely gets my heart rate up.

Between this week’s-worth of hurricane warnings and four slugs on my kitchen floor, I was genuinely more concerned about the slugs. The hurricanes were almost more of a fascination, although Charley came close to actually causing damage to Savannah had it not swung out to sea as it passed us. The slugs made me miss the -40°F days out on the frozen tundra of North Dakota. Let’s see a slug slither its way near me then.

This is why I could never be on Fear Factor, either.
