Bonnie and Chuck

Savannah City Hall getting Kevlar flaps for Hurricane CharleyAt approximately 6:00 this morning, Hurricane Charley passed by the coast near Savannah having devistated parts of central Florida, and looking to cause only slightly less damage to the Carolinas. Those of us in coastal Georgia were seemingly spared the full force of what was once a Category-4 hurricane, Charley having taken a polite jaunt out to sea as it neared Savannah.

Charley, preceded by Bonnie two days earlier, were the first major tropical storms to hit here in Savannah since I moved here. Even though we didn’t get much of the storm, it was fascinating to see the preparations made — windows covered up, constant weather updates from everybody you saw, events cancelled, etc. We had more than three days notice. We never had that much notice for the storms we’d get in Fargo. Even though they weren’t as big as hurricanes, the blizzards, tornados, floods and ice storms could be just as dangerous — at times more so, due to their lack of warning. I guess every part of the country has its own uniquely dangerous weather.
