Alligator Jazz

Last night, after we finished our preparations for Hurricane Jeanne, Jenny and I headed down to Forsyth Park to catch the final night of the Savannah Jazz Festival. It was a gorgeous evening outside, and hundreds of people were sitting out in the park listening to some very talented groups on the stage.

For me, the most memorable part of the evening was the food. As we started walking from our car, four or five blocks away, we could hear the Jazz getting louder and smell the food getting nearer. They had a bunch of vendors lined up along the edge of the performance area with big smokers and grills, to fresh seafood stands and fried favorites. We ended up with a shredded-barbecue pork sandwich, a couple of Amber Bochs, and, of all things, Alligator-on-a-Stick. Being from Minnesota, I’m used to getting darn-near anything cooked on a stick, but this was new to me. Delicious. They beer-batter-fried a large hunk of alligator meat (on a stick, of course) and poured a spicy barbecue sauce on top. It tasted like a cross between poultry and pork, and their sauce was excellent.

Of course, after relaxing and having fun last night, I’m spending most of today with homework and the Weather Channel. So it goes.
